Dear IUCN Member,
It is with great hope and determination that I join you in welcoming 2021 while also extending my wishes to you for a safe and healthy new year.
With the IUCN World Conservation Congress now rescheduled for 3 to 11 September 2021 in Marseille, France, I am more committed than ever to my campaign to serve as the next President of the Union.
While the world will be faced with many challenges as it recovers and rebuilds from the COVID-19 pandemic, we also have an unprecedented opportunity to re-think nature conservation by taking a fresh look at leadership and governance.
Over the coming nine months, I look forward to the opportunity to meet all IUCN members and to listen to your ideas for ensuring the Union plays a constructive role on the global stage at this critical juncture.
As I embark on this new year with a renewed sense of optimism, I invite you to be inspired by the words of one of my favorite authors, the Turkish novelist Elif Shafak: “Even though we may carry pessimism of the intellect, we need optimism of the heart. We must not be discouraged in the face of challenging circumstances, when our work is needed most.”
Sincerely,
Razan Al Mubarak
